What Goes Into a Paver Patio Built to Last

The aesthetic of a paver patio is what homeowners shop for — the color, the pattern, the shape. But the longevity is what matters two decades in, and longevity is determined entirely by what’s underneath the visible pavers. Base depth. Base compaction. Edge restraint. Drainage. Polymeric sand. Get those right and the patio looks new at year 15. Get them wrong and you’re looking at settling, weed growth, and shifting pavers by year 5.

Finishing Touch builds to the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) standard, which is the industry specification for paver installation. We’ve held ICPI certification since 2015. Every paver patio we install gets the same treatment: 6-inch compacted gravel base for patios (deeper for driveways and high-traffic), geotextile fabric to separate base from subgrade, full perimeter edge restraint, and polymeric sand jointing that locks the system together.

The Installation Process — What Actually Happens On-Site

Day 1: Layout & Excavation

Mark the patio outline with paint. Remove sod and topsoil. Excavate to base depth — 8 to 10 inches below finished grade for patios. Haul soil off-site or set aside for grading. Inspect the subgrade for soft spots that need additional removal.

Day 2: Base Installation

Roll out geotextile fabric to separate base material from subgrade clay. Install gravel base in 2-inch lifts. Compact each lift with a plate compactor before adding the next. Total finished base depth: 6 inches minimum for patios.

Day 3-4: Bedding Sand & Paver Laying

Spread 1 inch of bedding sand, screed level. Lay pavers in chosen pattern starting from a fixed edge. Cut pavers as needed for curves and edges using a wet saw. Tom personally aligns the first three rows to set the pattern for the rest of the job.

Day 5: Edge Restraint & Sand Jointing

Install edge restraint along all unsupported perimeter edges and spike into base. Sweep polymeric sand into joints. Activate with water in light passes — heavy water causes polymeric splatter on paver surfaces. Allow 24 hours to cure before traffic.

Day 6+: Final Walkthrough

Inspect every joint, every cut, every edge. Mark anything that needs correction. Final cleanup. Tom walks the project with you, talks through care, and we don’t invoice until everything is right.

Maintenance Going Forward

Polymeric sand may need a light top-up after 5-7 years in heavily-used areas. Otherwise the patio is essentially maintenance-free. Rinse with water for cleaning. Avoid pressure washing the joints directly. We provide a written care guide on completion.

Paver Patio vs. Stamped Concrete vs. Poured Concrete Slab

Homeowners often ask why a paver patio costs more upfront than a poured concrete slab. The honest answer: in Missouri’s freeze-thaw climate, a paver patio outlasts a concrete slab by 10-15 years on average, and outlasts stamped concrete by similar margins. The lifecycle cost favors pavers significantly.

Poured concrete slab: Lowest upfront cost. Cracks within 5-15 years in Missouri due to freeze-thaw cycles and clay soil movement. Cracks can’t be invisibly repaired — they spread. Replacement requires complete demolition.

Stamped concrete: Mid-range cost. Same crack vulnerability as plain concrete slabs, but the visible stamped pattern makes cracks more obvious. Color fades within 5-10 years. Sealing required every 2-3 years.

Paver patio: Higher upfront cost. 25-30+ year design life. Individual pavers can be lifted and replaced if damaged — invisible repair. No color fade on quality Belgard pavers. Minimal ongoing maintenance.

If budget is the only consideration and you’re planning to sell within 5-7 years, a concrete slab might make sense. If you’re building outdoor space you intend to use long-term, pavers are the better investment.

Walkway and Driveway Installations

The same construction standards apply to walkways and driveways, but with different base depths and edge restraint specifications.

Walkways typically use the same 6-inch base as patios but with narrower cross-section. Pattern choice matters more for visual impact — running bond and herringbone work well for straight walks, while curved walks often use circular patterns or organic stone shapes. Front entry walks benefit from bullnose-edged stepping units at any grade transitions.

Driveways require 8-10 inches of base depth and higher-strength pavers rated for vehicle traffic. We use Belgard’s driveway-rated paver lines exclusively for driveway work. Edge restraint along driveway perimeters needs to handle constant vehicle loading, so we use heavy-gauge restraint with longer spikes than patio installations.

Driveways also need attention to where they tie into the public street and into garages or carports. Transition details and slope calculations matter — water needs to drain off the driveway away from the house foundation, not toward it.

Paver Patio & Walkway FAQs

How thick should a paver patio base be?

Six inches of compacted gravel base is the ICPI standard for residential paver patios in Missouri. The base must be installed and compacted in 2-inch lifts rather than dumped and tamped once — that’s the difference between a base that lasts 25 years and one that settles in 3. Driveways and high-traffic areas use 8-10 inches. We never go below 6 inches on a patio, regardless of how the homeowner’s previous contractor did it.

What's polymeric sand and why does it matter?

Polymeric sand is jointing sand mixed with a polymer binder. When you sweep it into the paver joints and activate it with water, the polymer hardens into a flexible bond that locks the paver system together. It prevents weed growth, resists ant invasion, doesn’t wash out in rain, and holds the joint integrity that keeps individual pavers from shifting. Regular sand washes out within a year or two. Polymeric sand lasts 10+ years before any touch-up.

Can I match my existing brick or stone?

In most cases, yes. Belgard’s product catalog includes hundreds of paver styles and color blends, and we can usually find a close match to existing brick, stone, or paver work. If your existing material is a discontinued product, we can sometimes blend new pavers to harmonize visually even if exact matching isn’t possible. Bring photos of the existing material to the property walk and we’ll talk through options.

Do pavers crack like concrete?

No — and this is the main reason pavers handle Missouri freeze-thaw better than poured concrete. A concrete slab is a single rigid surface. When the ground moves or freezes, the whole slab cracks. Pavers are individual units — they can shift slightly relative to each other without breaking the surface. The joint sand absorbs the movement. That’s why properly installed pavers regularly last 25-30+ years while comparable concrete slabs crack within 10-15.

What affects the cost of a paver patio?

Paver patio pricing varies depending on several factors including patio size, excavation requirements, grading conditions, drainage needs, paver selection, access to the work area, and overall project complexity. Features such as retaining walls, fire pits, lighting, seating walls, and custom borders can also affect the overall project scope.
