Hardscape and Landscape Work in O’Fallon
O’Fallon is one of our most active service cities outside St. Charles itself. Roughly 15 minutes from our shop, it’s a short enough drive to maintain full owner supervision on multi-day projects, and the city’s steady growth has produced a deep base of homes that benefit from hardscape and landscape upgrades.
Most of O’Fallon’s housing stock falls into three broad eras: established 1980s-90s subdivisions on the south and west sides, late 90s through 2000s growth zones across the central and northern parts of the city, and newer construction in the developing areas around WingHaven and the Highway K corridor. Each era has typical lot characteristics that affect how we approach hardscape projects.
The newer subdivisions tend to have aggressive grading patterns that often create drainage problems within a few years of original construction settling. We do a lot of corrective drainage work in newer O’Fallon neighborhoods — French drains, swales, regrading — alongside the patio and wall projects that brought us out for the initial estimate.

Site Conditions in O’Fallon
O’Fallon’s soils are dominated by clay-heavy profiles typical of the broader St. Charles County uplands. The clay holds water, drains slowly, and creates the lateral pressure that causes retaining walls to fail when they aren’t properly drained and backfilled.
The other site issue we see frequently in O’Fallon is grade — many newer subdivisions were built on aggressively reshaped sites, and as the fill settles over 5-10 years, drainage patterns shift. Water that originally flowed away from the foundation now collects in low spots, or pools at downspout outlets, or settles against retaining walls that weren’t designed for the eventual water load. Most of our O’Fallon work includes addressing one or more drainage issues.
For paver work, the clay soils mean we’re extra-attentive to base preparation — geotextile fabric separating clay subgrade from gravel base is non-negotiable, and base compaction in 2-inch lifts (rather than dumping and tamping) prevents the long-term settling that ruins cheap paver installs.
Recent Work in O’Fallon and Surrounding Areas
One of our portfolio retaining wall projects is a multi-tone segmental wall installation in O’Fallon — visible in our project gallery. The wall handled a significant grade change along a side yard, included proper drainage tile and gravel backfill, and uses a multi-tone Belgard block selection that visually breaks up the wall length while maintaining structural integrity.
We’ve also completed multiple paver patio projects across the WingHaven and Heatherton areas, ranging from straightforward rectangular patios with seat walls up to larger entertaining spaces with fire features and integrated lighting. The newer construction areas often pair patio work with corrective grading to fix downspout drainage that wasn’t routed correctly during initial build.
What Our Customers Say
“Finish Touch gets 5 stars from me. They built us a beautiful looking retaining wall at the rear of our house four years ago this month and were the low bidder by far. I waited to post a review until now because build quality of a retaining wall can’t be measured until after passage of time. Their wall has held up nearly perfectly over four years now.”
— Angi review, Ballwin MO
“This is the second project Tom Watson and Finishing Touch Landscape has done at our home. They replaced an approximately 70-ft long, 3.5-ft high retaining wall along our driveway. They completed the work within a week and the finished project looks amazing. Tom is a pro. We will use him again.”
— Angi review, Ballwin MO
“Tom Watson and his crew were excellent in every aspect. Tom gave us ideas on what plants work well in shaded areas, plus a layout for rock to be added in front of our house. This project was completed in our needed time frame with no problems.”
— Angi review, St. Louis area
Common Questions from O'Fallon Homeowners
Do I need a permit for a paver patio in O'Fallon?
O’Fallon requires permits for many hardscape projects depending on project size, attachment to the home, and impact on drainage. Retaining walls over a certain height, raised patios, and any structures with footings typically require permits. The City of O’Fallon planning and zoning department handles applications. We confirm specific requirements for your address and project as part of the estimate.
How long does it take to drive from St. Charles to O'Fallon for an estimate?
About 15-20 minutes from our shop on W Cheshire Drive to most O’Fallon addresses, depending on which side of the city. We typically schedule O’Fallon estimates in clusters when possible — multiple property walks in the same trip — but a single-property visit isn’t a problem given the short drive.
My newer O'Fallon home has drainage issues. Can you help?
Yes — corrective drainage work in newer subdivisions is one of our most common O’Fallon projects. The aggressive grading used in newer construction often creates drainage problems within 5-10 years of build as fill settles and original grade lines shift. Solutions range from simple downspout extensions and dry wells through to French drain installations and partial regrading. We diagnose during the property walk.
Do you work in WingHaven?
Yes — WingHaven is one of our active project areas in O’Fallon. The larger lot sizes and higher-end homes there often support full design-build projects combining patios, walls, fire features, and full landscape design. HOA review requirements vary by section; we’re familiar with the typical submission process and design constraints.
Can you match my existing brick on an O'Fallon home?
In most cases yes. Belgard’s catalog includes hundreds of paver styles and color blends, and we can usually find a close match for existing brick or stone work. Bring photos of the existing material to the property walk and we’ll talk through options.
