Hardscape and Landscape Work in Chesterfield
Chesterfield is our most active service area in west St. Louis County, about 25 minutes from our St. Charles base. The community has a deep base of established neighborhoods, a strong demographic supportive of substantial outdoor living investment, and the lot sizes to support elaborate hardscape projects.
Chesterfield homes we work on typically fall into three eras: established 1970s-80s subdivisions throughout the central and southern areas, 1990s-2000s growth zones across the western developing parts of the city, and the high-end estate neighborhoods on the southern and southeastern sides. Each era produces different project types — from straightforward patio refresh in older homes to multi-feature outdoor living buildouts in newer construction.
The high-end estate areas of Chesterfield produce some of the largest residential projects in our portfolio. Comprehensive design-build engagements combining custom-designed patios, multi-tier retaining walls, outdoor fireplaces, full landscape design, and lighting can run into substantial project sizes.

Site Conditions in Chesterfield
Chesterfield soils vary considerably by location. The areas closer to the Meramec River have deeper alluvial soils with better drainage characteristics. The higher-elevation areas have the typical regional clay-loam profile with shallower topsoil. Some areas have limestone bedrock close to the surface, particularly in the southern and southwestern parts of the community.
For high-end estate properties, we often encounter sites with significant grade changes that require retaining wall solutions integrated into the broader landscape design. Drainage routing on these properties requires more careful planning than on flatter suburban lots — water needs to be moved across substantial distances without erosion, and discharge points need to be selected carefully.
Recent Work in Chesterfield and Surrounding Areas
Chesterfield projects represent some of our most design-intensive work. Recent projects include comprehensive outdoor living buildouts with custom paver patios, integrated seat walls, outdoor fireplaces, and lighting systems. Multi-tier retaining wall installations addressing significant grade challenges on sloped estate lots. Full landscape redesigns coordinated with hardscape installation as integrated design-build engagements.
The longer-term performance of our Chesterfield projects is what we point clients to — walls and patios we built 5-10 years ago that still perform like new. That track record is the key differentiator for high-end projects where the homeowner is making a substantial investment and expecting two decades of performance.
What Our Customers Say
“Finish Touch gets 5 stars from me. They built us a beautiful looking retaining wall at the rear of our house four years ago this month and were the low bidder by far. I waited to post a review until now because build quality of a retaining wall can’t be measured until after passage of time. Their wall has held up nearly perfectly over four years now.”
— Angi review, Ballwin MO
“This is the second project Tom Watson and Finishing Touch Landscape has done at our home. They replaced an approximately 70-ft long, 3.5-ft high retaining wall along our driveway. They completed the work within a week and the finished project looks amazing. Tom is a pro. We will use him again.”
— Angi review, Ballwin MO
“Tom Watson and his crew were excellent in every aspect. Tom gave us ideas on what plants work well in shaded areas, plus a layout for rock to be added in front of our house. This project was completed in our needed time frame with no problems.”
— Angi review, St. Louis area
Common Questions from Chesterfield Homeowners
Do you work in the high-end Chesterfield estate neighborhoods?
Yes. The estate areas — Old Lake Forest, Bellerive Estates, Wildhorse Creek, and similar neighborhoods — are some of our most active project zones. Larger lots, more ambitious project scopes, and supportive demographics for high-quality hardscape work make Chesterfield a strong fit.
How does Chesterfield permitting work?
Chesterfield handles permits through its planning and zoning department. Most hardscape projects require some level of permit or review — retaining walls, structures, raised patios, work near setbacks or easements. We handle permit applications as part of project scope.
Is Chesterfield far for your crew?
About 25 minutes from our shop. Inside our 30-mile service radius and one of our most active service cities outside St. Charles County itself. Daily supervision on multi-day projects is not a problem.
Do you work with HOA architectural review committees?
Yes — many Chesterfield subdivisions have HOA design review processes for hardscape and landscape modifications. We provide design documents, material specifications, and project descriptions appropriate for HOA submission.
Can you match the upscale aesthetic of high-end Chesterfield homes?
Yes. The Belgard catalog includes premium paver lines (Dublin Cobble, Mega-Bergerac, Catalina Slate) that work well with upscale architecture, and we work extensively with natural stone — limestone, sandstone, granite — for projects where the aesthetic warrants it. Our designers guide material selection during the design phase.
