Hardscape and Landscape Work in St. Charles
St. Charles is home. Our shop is on W Cheshire Drive, our base of operations sits right here, and the majority of our project history over nearly two decades has been built within the city limits and surrounding county. We know the soil. We know the drainage patterns by neighborhood. We know the typical lot configurations from Historic Frenchtown to the newer subdivisions north of Highway 364.
What that local presence means in practice: shorter mobilization, faster scheduling, and a contractor who genuinely lives the work environment. The Finishing Touch team is at the shop every morning and at job sites every day during the build season. There is no project that gets short-supervised because of distance.
St. Charles homes range across multiple eras and architectural styles — historic brick on the Frenchtown side, mid-century ranches, two-story 80s suburbs, and newer construction across the northern growth corridor. Our hardscape and landscape work tailors to architectural context. A modern paver layout that looks right in front of a 2010 build looks wrong in front of a Frenchtown row house, and we design accordingly.

Site Conditions in St. Charles
Most of St. Charles sits on clay-loam soils typical of the Mississippi River floodplain transition zone. Drainage varies neighborhood by neighborhood — areas closer to the river bottoms hold water longer, while properties up on the higher terraces drain better but often have shallow soil over limestone bedrock. Both conditions affect how we build.
For paver patios, the clay-heavy areas require attention to base drainage so water doesn’t collect under the gravel base. For retaining walls, soil expansion is a real consideration — clay backfill behind any wall is a recipe for eventual failure, which is why we always use gravel backfill regardless of project budget pressure.
The areas with shallow soil over rock present different challenges. Footing depths for retaining walls sometimes require breaking into bedrock or working around it. We carry the right equipment for both conditions.
Recent Work in St. Charles and Surrounding Areas
Our St. Charles project history runs deep. Recent and representative projects include a raised paver patio with lit seat wall and fire pit at a property near the Country Club Hills area, completed in nine days with full drainage prep and Belgard pavers. A multi-tier retaining wall installation in the Spencer Creek area solved a long-standing erosion issue along a downhill side yard. A front entry walkway with planter bed island created a sophisticated approach for a home in the New Town area.
The longer-standing projects matter more for evaluation than recent ones. Walls and patios we built in St. Charles in 2010-2014 are still performing perfectly — no settling, no lean, no joint failures. That’s the test of installation quality. Anyone can make a hardscape project look good on the day they leave the site. Making it still look good in year 12 is what separates ICPI-trained installation from contractor-shortcut installation.
What Our Customers Say
“Finish Touch gets 5 stars from me. They built us a beautiful looking retaining wall at the rear of our house four years ago this month and were the low bidder by far. I waited to post a review until now because build quality of a retaining wall can’t be measured until after passage of time. Their wall has held up nearly perfectly over four years now.”
— Angi review, Ballwin MO
“This is the second project Tom Watson and Finishing Touch Landscape has done at our home. They replaced an approximately 70-ft long, 3.5-ft high retaining wall along our driveway. They completed the work within a week and the finished project looks amazing. Tom is a pro. We will use him again.”
— Angi review, Ballwin MO
“Tom Watson and his crew were excellent in every aspect. Tom gave us ideas on what plants work well in shaded areas, plus a layout for rock to be added in front of our house. This project was completed in our needed time frame with no problems.”
— Angi review, St. Louis area
Common Questions from St. Charles Homeowners
Do you need a permit for a paver patio in St. Charles, MO?
St. Charles typically does not require a permit for at-grade paver patios that aren’t attached to the home and don’t change drainage characteristics significantly. Raised patios, retaining walls over a certain height, structures with footings, and fire features generally do require permits. Permit requirements are set by St. Charles City and depend on specific project details. We confirm permit requirements as part of every estimate so there are no surprises.
How quickly can you start a St. Charles project?
Since our shop is in St. Charles, we have shorter mobilization times for in-city projects than for far-edge service area work. Typical project start is 3-6 weeks from estimate signing — sooner for off-peak months (November through February) and longer in peak spring scheduling (March-May). Emergency work like failing retaining walls or drainage problems gets priority scheduling when possible.
What soils should I expect on my St. Charles property?
Most of St. Charles sits on clay-loam soils, with variation based on elevation and proximity to the Missouri River bottoms. Lower-lying properties drain slower and may have water issues. Higher properties often have shallow soil over limestone bedrock, which affects footing depths for walls and steps. We assess soil conditions during the property walk before any estimate.
Do you serve historic Frenchtown and Old Town St. Charles?
Yes. Older neighborhoods get the same project standards as newer construction — sometimes with additional consideration for historic context. We can design hardscape and landscape work that respects the architectural era of historic homes (brick patterns and natural stone selections that complement period architecture, rather than modern paver lines that would look out of place).
Are there areas of St. Charles you can't serve?
We work everywhere inside St. Charles city limits and across the surrounding county. There aren’t areas we exclude based on location. The only constraint is project type — we focus on residential hardscape and landscape, not commercial, and we don’t do pools, fences, or decks.
